The Institute of State and Law: 100 Years of Service to the Nation

The Institute of State and Law of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the country’s leading scientific legal centre that conducts research about theoretical problems of state and law, is marking its 100th anniversary in spring 2025. The institute is widely known for its fundamental and applied research, as well as its outstanding scientists, who made an enormous contribution to the formation of the Soviet state and law, the creation of the legal foundations of the International Military Tribunal that convicted Nazi criminals, and the post-war international system and its bodies (the UN and others), and also ensured the development of domestic law and legislation, including pioneering the creation of a number of branches of domestic legal science.

Andrey Lisitsyn-Svetlanov

Andrey Gennadyevich Lisitsyn-Svetlanov is the Director of the Institute of State and Law of the Russian Academy of Sciences and a full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Lisitsyn-Svetlanov was born in Moscow in 1951. He graduated from the Faculty of Law of Lomonosov Moscow State University in 1973. He studied at Columbia Law School in New York (USA) in 1986–1987 and earned a Master’s degree in law (LL.M). He studied at the graduate school of the Institute of State and Law of the USSR Academy of Sciences from 1973–1976. He defended his thesis “Review of disputes in international industrial, scientific and technical cooperation” in 1977 and his doctoral dissertation “Modern trends in the development of international civil proceedings” in 2002. Lisitsyn-Svetlanov has worked at the Institute of State and Law since 1977 and has been the Director of the Institute of State and Law of the Russian Academy of Sciences since March 2004. He was elected as a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2008 and a full member in 2011. Lisitsyn-Svetlanov’s scientific interests include problems in international private law, international civil proceedings, intellectual property and the legal regulation of foreign investments. Lisitsyn-Svetlanov has made a significant contribution to the development of alternative procedures to litigation for settling disputes that arise in international economic relations. He has been selected as an arbiter in international commercial arbitration as part of major cases in Russia and abroad. He has been practicing law for 25 years.
